CORINTH — Before New Hope and Corinth face off on the gridiron on Friday night, the two teams took to the court on Thursday night in Corinth for the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A playoffs.
A spot in the North Half championship, the semifinals, was on the line for both the Trojans and Warriors, and in the end, New Hope came out victorious in an emphatic straight-set victory, 25-12, 25-12, 25-15.
“It was a great win yesterday,” head coach Allison Woolbright said. “We played well and are now focused on Monday’s game at Lafayette. Final Four is a great accomplishment.”
Stiff competition awaits the Trojans (23-18) on Monday, who will travel to play a familiar foe in Lafayette, but New Hope, winners of five of their last seven matches, seem to be gaining confidence with every passing match.
Just as New Hope has been heating up, so have the Commodores. Lafayette has had the better of New Hope in recent years, winning three of their last four matches against the Trojans and their last seven matches overall.
The District 1 champs are 24-9 overall this season, but New Hope has the last laugh when it comes to postseason play, defeating the Commodores in four sets during the 2021 playoffs.
“We had big roles to fill at the beginning of our season and we have worked hard to get where we are,” Woolbright said. “I’m so proud of each player and how they have contributed to our season.”
