PHEBA — It’s been a tough go of things in recent years for Hebron Christian softball as the program has looked to stabilize itself within the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools.
Following the retirement of Randy Hayes, the Eagles hired a new face for the 2023 season in Timmy Warren, someone who finds himself in a place he’s yet to be in within the world of softball.
“It really came about with a girl that I was training who goes to Hebron,” Warren said. “They really talked me into it. The game’s the same, for the most part, but I always like a pretty good challenge. What better a challenge than going to coach high school softball.”
Warren comes into the program with a baseball background and Hebron is his first experience coaching softball at any level, let alone as a head coach.
However, despite pitching styles, the two sports share more similarities than differences, helping him out through the transition.
Growing pains still persist, but the job has turned enjoyable after not even being sure he wanted to take over the reins earlier this summer.
“It’s been a good decision,” Warren said. “I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly and I’m extremely excited and ready to start the season.”
Warren inherited a young roster this season, one without any juniors or seniors on it. The sophomore class is the most experienced for 2023, and a lack of veteran leadership might frighten other coaches.
Warren instead sees it as a strength, noting the promise of some players and talent that he’s seen in practice over the summer.
“We have a small and young roster,” Warren said. “I know there’s some good talent that I have right now. The big thing is just fundamentals.”
Hebron opens up its 2023 season Friday night, hosting Starkville Academy, and there is newfound optimism within the program.
“These girls have been practicing four or five days a week for the past two months,” Warren said. “They put in the energy every single day…I want everyone to have the ability to succeed on the field whether you’ve been playing for years or this is your first year playing…We have a great defense and if we can eliminate walks in the circle, we’ll be good.”
