Seven seniors signed to play Junior College ball at West Point on Wednesday, including Shamane Clark, Quantarrius Dawson, Jamarrion Edwards, Jermaine Elliot, Elihjah Lowery, Mac McGee and Marcus Mukeba.
Green Wave head coach Brett Morgan delivered an introductory address before the ceremony, celebrating the community that backs his team, and got emotional when talking about the Class of 2025 and all they’ve accomplished in their careers.
“I’ve never been around a tougher group of people,” Morgan said, fighting back tears in his address to the senior class.
Morgan has been the head coach for just one season, but he’s been part of the program since 2009. He’s seen this group of seniors since they came through in middle school, bear the weight of expectation that comes with being a Green Wave player, and add to the program’s history with back-to-back state championships.
“The legacy and the mental toughness that you’ve set for this program will carry on,” he said. “We’re going to be up here next year talking about a three-peat because of you and what you’ve done, the standard you set.”
Morgan took over when Chris Chambless retired after 18 years in charge, winning seven state championships in the process. Morgan rarely acknowledged his own contributions throughout a historic first season in charge, but always took the opportunity to highlight the role his players have in upholding the high standards of West Point football.
“You carried this program through a coaching change,” he said to the seniors. “It wasn’t anything about me, it was about you and our community believing in us, you believed in us, you knew what we were going to do and pushed this program forward. You brought in my era as a head coach, and there is no way I could ever say how much I appreciate you and what you mean to this program.”
