The Jackets saw five players sign to play JUCO ball next year, with all five following former head coach Chris Jones to Hinds Community College.
Jones left Starkville in December after eight years with the Jackets, including a 2022 state championship.
Interim head coach William Stewart was there at the SHS auditorium to lead the celebrations.
“Anytime you get kids going to the next level is a blessing,” Stewart said. “This climate of football with the transfer portal, it’s hard for kids to get an offer, so the fact we have five kids able to go and continue their education and play football, it’s just a blessing.”
Stewart was one of the architects of Jones’ offensive scheme at Starkville, acting as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. He saw the connection between Jones and the players, and ultimately the decision made a lot of sense for them.
“Chris coached these guys, he knows them, and the great thing is they know him and his system. They’re ahead of the curve with everyone else. He did a great job recruiting them and coaching them while he was here, he did a lot of great things for Starkville and our football program.”
