BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mississippi University for Women track and field competed at its second meet in as many days at the Emory University CrossPlex Showdown. The Owls came away with a trio of school records at Sunday’s event, after participating in the UAB Vulcan Invitational at the same facility on Saturday.
No team scores were kept.
In the women’s 200-meter dash, Michaiah Adams had a record run. Adams — who tied her own school mark (27.45) on Saturday at the UAB Vulcan Invitational on the same track — lowered her time to 27.25 seconds on Sunday.
Erin Jones had the highest placement by any Owls athlete at the Showdown, finishing fourth in the women’s triple jump. Jones had a school-record leap of 9.89 meters.
In the men’s mile, Joshua Gonsalves crushed the previous record (set by Robert Holly in 2021). Gonsalves’ time of 4:51.40 minutes was more than 21 seconds better than the previous MUW standard.
In the 400-meter races, there were a pair of near-record efforts by the Owls. In the women’s 400, Kaitlyn McRee’s 1:05.84 was just slower than her 2021 time of 1:05.24 on the same track. On the men’s side, Tavonta Macon was just two-hundredths of a second off of his school record time, posting a 54.54. He ran 54.52 in 2022.
UAB Vulcan Invitational
Saturday’s UAB Vulcan Invitational proved to be a solid opener for the Owls, as four school records were either set or matched.
The first record of the day came in the men’s shot put. On his second attempt of the day, Tanner Collins uncorked a heave of 11.14 meters for a new MUW mark in the event.
The Owls’ distance runners then took center stage, with McRee and Gonsalves each beating their own records for the 800 meter run. McRee slashed nearly 11 seconds off of her previous best, crossing the line in a time of 2:33.34 minutes.
Gonsalves shaved more than a second off of his record, turning in a performance of 2:10.36 minutes in the men’s 800.
In the women’s 200 meters, Adams matched her school record – set in 2022 – by running a time of 27.45 seconds.
“I love what I saw today,” MUW coach Dedrick Burnett said. “We came back off the break in better shape than I expected.”
