Two Mississippi State men’s basketball alumni will spend their month fighting for an NBA rosters spot.
Cameron Matthews and RJ Melendez earned their way to NBA Summer League rosters and will spend July 9-19 playing in Las Vegas. Matthews is playing with the Charlotte Hornets, Melendez with the San Antonio Spurs.
Both found success last year in the NBA G-League, Matthews with the Houston Rockets affiliate Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Melendez with the Mexico City Capitanes, which do not have an NBA affiliate. Matthews averaged 12.1 points a game, Melendez averaged 11.5.
Melendez averaged 4.3 points and 3.0 blocks a game in the NBA Summer League California Classic July 3-6.
Melendez spent one season at State, 2024-25, averaging 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Matthews was a Bulldog his whole career, spending 2020-25 in Starkville. His best season, his true senior year, Matthews averaged 9.4 points and 6.8 rebounds a game.
