COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women’s athletic program saw another eventful week, this time headlined by the Owls women’s soccer team clinching a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament while defeating Westminster College to secure its fourth win of the season.

Kimi Norway scored the lone goal of the 1-0 win at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. She earned Owl of the Week honors from the school as the Owls (4-10-2, 3-4-0 SLIAC) ended a five-game winless run to keep their season alive.
“We had a great week of training and I believe it showed this weekend,” Owls head coach Ana Ramos said after the win. “The team bounced back well and earned a fantastic team win against a competitive Westminster team. Players continue to step up and accept the challenges put before them. It’s always a great feeling to celebrate the accumulation of the seniors’ accomplishments here at The W with a well-deserved win.”
The Owls were outshot 12-6 in the game, relying heavily on goalkeeper Alex Moon. The senior from England made nine saves to keep a clean sheet in the team’s third shutout of the season.
“We got the lead early and (the) defense, as always, managed to stay strong and composed,” Moon said of the performance. “Just like they have every single game this season. A lot of our success is down to the defense.”
Moon was named SLIAC Player of the Week for her performance.
“Week-in and week-out, Alex continues to prove that she’s one of the best ‘keepers in the conference,” Ramos said of her goalkeeper. “Whether in training or at games, she is a true competitor and pushes herself to be better every day. She earned a well-deserved shutout on Senior Day, and I couldn’t imagine a more fitting day for it to happen.”
The Owls volleyball team also picked up a win last week, defeating Welch College 3-0 in straight sets on Thursday. It was the team’s fourth win of the year, though the team did drop to 4-15 overall after a 3-2 loss to Lyon College on Friday.
The other Owls teams struggled for wins last week, with men’s soccer falling to 0-16 after losses to Webster University and Westminster College. The women’s basketball team began its season with an exhibition match against Jackson State on Saturday, losing 93-36 to the Division I program.
