COLUMBUS — It was a busy Thanksgiving week for Mississippi University for Women’s Owls hoops teams, particularly the women’s team as they fit three games around the holiday.

Both the men and women began St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at home on Tuesday against Lyon College.
Head coach Erich Vaughn’s women’s team rebounded from an 0-2 start with a big road win at Centenary heading into Thanksgiving week, posting their best offensive production so far with 94 points. The high scoring continued in the SLIAC home opener against Lyon College on Tuesday, but this time the Owls came up short in a tough 85-80 loss at home.
SLIAC Player of the Week Conley Langford scored 27 points to lead the Owls in scoring, followed closely by Calysia Phillips with 23.
Head coach Dean Burrows’ men’s team had a similar result in a 62-50 loss where the team shot just 31.3% from the floor. Jackson Reid led the team with 10 points, the only Owl in double-digits on the day. Defensively the Owls held their opponents to under 50% shooting but the inability to score led to their fourth loss of the season.
Vaughn’s group traveled to Jackson over the weekend for the Millsaps Tournament, where the Owls went winless against nonconference foes, losing 86-70 against Hendrix College on Saturday and 85-66 against the hosts on Sunday.
Phillips continued her good scoring form and was named Owl of the Week after posting back-to-back double-double performances at Millsaps. She scored 18 points with 10 rebounds against Hendrix before posting a season-best 26 and 11 on Sunday against the hosts.
Both teams will return to action on Thursday night against SLIAC opponent Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.
