COLUMBUS — Basketball season has arrived at Mississippi University for Women, with both the men’s and women’s teams beginning regular season action in the last week.
Dean Burrow’s Owls men’s team saw action on the road last week, traveling to Jackson for a date with Belhaven, losing 87-65 before a trip to New York for the Freilich Memorial Classic.
There the Owls lost matchups to Westfield State, 83-70, and Elmira College, 64-54, in tests against national NCAA Division III competition, moving to 0-3 on the year.
Fifth year senior Chris Evans leads the Owls in scoring with 11.7 points per game through the first three games.
Eric Vaughn’s Owls women’s team began its season with two home matchups against Millsaps College and Huntingdon College, losing 92-43 and 87-73 respectively against the regional rivals to move to 0-2 on the year.
Conley Langford and Calysia Phillips led the Owls in scoring, both averaging 12 points per game through two contests with the former shooting 53% from beyond the arc and the latter leading the team in rebounds.
Off the court, the Owls women’s cross country team wrapped up its fall slate with an appearance at the NCAA DIII South Regional. Sophomore Hannah Owens led the Owls with a 99th-placed finish, followed by senior Kalee Sanders in 154th.
This week the Owls basketball teams are back in action with the women traveling to face Centenary in Louisiana on Tuesday. The Owls men will face Pensacola Christian on the same night at home at 6 p.m.
