COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women held its annual Owls Athletics Golf Outing at Elm Lake Golf Course last weekend. It’s the primary fundraiser event for the athletic department and featured 21 groups of four competing in the shotgun-start event.

The event was staffed by MUW student-athletes from the men’s and women’s golf teams, and the golf coaching staff offered their help to players for additional donations. Assistant coach Scott Milam was available to take shots on a par-3 hole while head coach Benji Williams posted up at hole 18 to drive for anyone who purchased Benji Bucks.
“It was a little chilly this morning so it took me some time to get loose,” Williams said while on duty at the tee. “I’m hitting a little better now, they’re staying in the fairway for the most part.”
Williams was happy to get some drives in, especially for the donors. It was contributions like that which helped the Owls travel to Las Vegas in the spring for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
“It’s great to be out here,” Williams said. “Especially for everyone in the community, folks from out of town who helped to sponsor our event and donate money for our program, for the athletic department.”
The Owls men’s team competed at the Berry College Chick-fil-A Invitational in Georgia on Monday and Tuesday, with Matt Wilkinson securing the highest individual finish in a tie for 12th. Wilkinson finished +2 in both rounds for a +4 total.
The Owls team as a whole finished in sixth, gaining two spots from their Monday finish for the final standings on Tuesday.
It was the final tournament of the fall season for the men’s team, ranked No. 21 in the first NCAA DIII poll of the season. The reigning St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions performed well in the fall and will look to defend their crown in the spring.
“I’m very proud of the men and women that we have on the team,” Williams said of his teams. “They’re working hard, they’ll continue to work hard, and we just have to make sure that we’re prepared for the spring. Working toward our goals and making sure it doesn’t stop at conference play, and preparing for what comes next semester.”
