Mississippi State’s men’s golf team punched its ticket to the NCAA Championship tournament on Wednesday with a top-five finish in the Winston-Salem Regional at 26-under par.
Behind a spree of three days of excellent golf, including a record-setting Day 2, the Bulldogs earned the right to battle for a national championship at Omi La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Ca., from May 29-June 3.
State opened the tournament with a 6-under showing on Day 1 to climb up the leaderboard all the way to third and set the stage for massive Day 2. Powered by Garrett Endicott’s bogey-free 7-under 64 with five birdies and an eagle, the Bulldogs carded a 12-under 272 – the lowest round of NCAA Tournament golf in program history – to remain in the top five at fourth place heading into Tuesday’s Day 3.
On the final day, State kept its momentum going and finished at 8-under on the day for the final fifth-place spot needed to advance. Endicott again led the charge with six birdies for 5-under, Jackson Skinner had five birdies for 2-under and Dain Richie finished at 1-under with two birdies and an eagle.
Endicott’s three-day score of 14-under was good for third place individually, 5 shots behind leader Ben James of Virginia and second-place Cameron Tankersley of Ole Miss.
The Bulldogs finished behind fourth-place USC (27-under), third-place Ole Miss (31-under) and Pepperdine and Virginia, who tied for first at 36-under. All of those teams also advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament.
