With a much needed bye week upon it, MSU is taking the time to get healthy.
Most notably, quarterback Tommy Stevens did not practice during Tuesday’s session after being forced from Saturday’s game against Auburn with a lower body injury.
He was spotted with a boot on his right foot at the tail end of the contest.
“It’s good that it’s a bye week,” MSU coach Joe Moorhead said. “We’re hoping he’ll be back Sunday.”
On a more positive front, junior college transfer and former Michigan running back Kareem Walker did practice Tuesday.
Walker, whose arrival and ability to play have been long delayed as he dealt with a number of administrative issues, still must go through the NCAA’s five-day acclimation period before he can go full-contact.
A five-star recruit out of high school, Walker adds some much needed depth to an MSU backfield that has been banged up of late.
“Even in the game he’s like another coach, he tells me what I can do better to help my game,” junior running back Kylin Hill said of Walker. “…he’s an older guy — he’s been in the game longer than me. So I’m very happy for him, very excited to come back. He’s been waiting on the moment.”
Moorhead hitting the recruiting trail
As has become customary during bye weeks, Moorhead and the MSU coaching staff will use this weekend to sure up their 2020 recruiting class.
With 24 commitments already on board, there only remains a few loose ends to tie up as the class nears completion.
Moorhead, a vicious recruiter, expressed Tuesday just how involved he is in the recruiting process..
“I’d be hard pressed to believe there’s another head coach in the country with a personal involvement that I have with every one of our top prospects,” he said.
Early signing day is Dec. 18.
Moorhead address Fair Pay to Play Act
With the Fair Pay to Play Act now signed into law in the state of California, college sports stand to change forever.
Given the recent change in legislation in the Golden State, Moorhead offered a brief comment regarding his stance on the subject Tuesday.
“I think you guys are getting to know me well enough that I’m not going to shoot from the hip and kind of throw something out there that turns into a soundbite on a topic I haven’t had a chance to research,” Moorhead said. “When I kind of delve into it and what they’re talking about doing and what some of the specifics are relative to the player compensation and how the NCAA reacts to that individually by state, or by school, then I’ll be able to offer an opinion.”
