STARKVILLE — Another day, another accolade for Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. A day after being named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in a 34-29 win at then-No. 8 LSU, Prescott added his second national weekly award of the season on Tuesday, when he was named the Davey O’Brien National Player of the Week.
The Davey O’Brien Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top quarterback, listed Prescott to its preseason watch list prior to the season.
On Tuesday, the organization honored Prescott for his 373-yard, three-touchdown showing at LSU. Prescott has touchdown passes of 74 and nine yards, and he added a 56-yard touchdown run.
“I thought Dak played his best game since he’s been here,” said MSU head coach Dan Mullen. “It’s not that he played above his abilities, he just played exactly the way we expect him to play. That’s what he brings to the table.”
MSU’s Smith named Senior Bowl Player of the Week
For the first time this season, Mississippi State defensive end Preston Smith did not win the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Lineman of the Week Award. Instead, the Stone Mountain, Georgia native added another award in its place after his fourth-straight dominating performance.
After a five-tackle, two-sack performance against LSU, Smith was named the Senior Bowl’s National Defensive Player of the Week.
Smith has been one of the nation’s most disruptive defensive lineman to date, recording 14 tackles – five for loss – three sacks, two interceptions, three pass deflections, three quarterback hurries and a nation-leading two blocked kicks.
The 6-foot-6, 267-pound Smith was named the SEC’s Defensive Lineman of the Week three straight times to open the season.
SEC Nation picks MSU for Oct. 4 site
MSU’s showdown with No. 6 Texas A&M, scheduled for 11 a.m., is already one of the nation’s biggest games slated for Oct. 4. On Tuesday, the SEC Network announced it had chosen MSU as the site for its morning broadcast of SEC Nation, the network’s traveling college football show.
The broadcast will emanate from The Junction on MSU’s campus, and will air live from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.
The SEC Nation lineup features former NFL/SEC players Tim Tebow and Marcus Spears, host Joe Tessitore, talk radio host Paul Finebaum and reporter Kaylee Hartung.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early and wear maroon. Tickets for the MSU-A&M game are still available through HailState.com/Tickets. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 1.888.GO.DAWGS or in person at the MSU Athletic Ticket Office on the first floor of the Bryan Administration Building.
MSU, ranked 14th in the Associated Press poll and 16th in the USA Today Top 25, is off to a 4-0 start following a 34-29 win at LSU last Saturday. The Bulldogs recorded their first victory in Baton Rouge since 1991 led by the offensive trio of quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Josh Robinson and wide receiver Jameon Lewis.
