Mississippi State’s men’s golf team would have liked a better start to its run in the NCAA Men’s National Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on Friday.
The Bulldogs finished 10-over par after the first round. The team tallied 13 total bogeys and six double bogeys. Graduate student Dain Richie was the only Bulldog golfer to finish the day under par. He shot a one-under par and had a six-hole stretch, 7-12, where he recorded five birdies.
MSU had two players finish at two-over par. Senior Garrett Endicot, who entered the day coming off a 14-under 199 and third place finish in the NCAA regional, shot two bogeys in the front nine but par on every other hole. Senior Ugo Malcor had a birdie and four bogeys in the front nine. He opened the back nine with a birdie, and stayed even the rest of the way for a two-over finish.
Freshman Jackson Skinner finished seven-over par, wrapping up his day with a double and triple bogey. He finished round one with a score of 79.
Junior Drew Wilson’s day ended with a score of 81, nine-over par. Four double bogeys on the day were detrimental in Wilson’s Friday outing.
The Bulldogs will need to clean up their act and clean it up fast to keep their run in the championship going. After three rounds of stroke play, the field narrows to the top-15 teams for match play to decide the NCAA title.
