STARKVILLE — Two positions of need for the Mississippi State football team took unexpected hits Tuesday.
MSU’s offensive line lost three of five starters from last season, and both starting safeties graduated, leaving questions at both spots. Those questions remain following the transfers of offensive lineman Kent Flowers and defensive back Jahmere Irvin-Sills. The transfers of both players were confirmed by a university spokesman Tuesday afternoon.
Flowers, a 6-foot-4, 320-pounder who played guard and tackle in limited playing time at MSU, played in six games last season as a redshirt freshman. He played in MSU’s first six games, but he didn’t play again after a 38-23 win against Auburn on Oct. 11. Entering his redshirt sophomore season, the former Hollandale Simmons product is transferring to Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson.
Irvin-Sills, from Elkton, Maryland, played in 10 games a season ago, mostly at cornerback. In the spring, however, he transitioned to safety, giving MSU an extra body at a position depleted by graduation and injuries. It is unknown where he plans to transfer.
