Mississippi State softball came close to upsetting No. 17 Missouri Sunday afternoon, but ultimately couldn’t finish the job, falling 6-5.
MSU falls to 22-19 overall and remains winless in Southeastern Conference play at 0-12.
Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning, Chloe Malau’ulu tied the contest with a clutch two-run single. But the Bulldogs allowed the go-ahead run to score in the bottom part of the frame.
“I think that’s what Chloe does best,” head coach Samantha Ricketts said in a news release. “She provides a spark for us at the top of the lineup, especially in the late innings. We won the late innings today, but we’ve got to clean up the freebies and the errors. I think that makes the difference in the game.”
Of note, MSU’s Mia Davidson picked up her 200th career hit in impressive fashion, cranking out a home run to left field.
“She’s had 200 hits and 60-plus of them have been home runs,” Ricketts said of Davidson. “Both numbers are impressive in their own right. She’s left her name all over the Mississippi State offensive record books, and it’s been fun to see her continue to do so and break record after record over her four years.”
The Bulldogs are back in action in a doubleheader with Jackson State on Tuesday.
