Two Mississippi State freshman wide receivers, Mario Craver and JJ Harrell, were arrested Monday for possession of marijuana in a vehicle and possession of beer by a minor, according to records from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office.
Both were four-star recruits who enrolled early this year and participated in spring practice. Craver is from Birmingham, Ala., while Harrell is from Sardis, in northwest Mississippi.
In Mississippi, possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana does not count as a misdemeanor or a felony and carries a maximum fine of $250. However, possession of 30 grams or less of the drug in any part of a vehicle besides the trunk does classify as a misdemeanor, with the penalty of 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana is a felony, with heavy fines and incarceration sentences depending on the amount.
Possession of beer by a minor (under the age of 21) is classified as a misdemeanor in Mississippi and carries a fine between $200 and $500.
Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lebby issued a brief statement on the arrests, saying, “We’re aware of the matter and are continuing to gather information. We have no further comment at this time.”
