For the third time in her career, Mississippi State golfer Julia Lopez Ramirez will play in the Arnold Palmer Cup, with this year’s edition beginning Friday at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland.
Structured similarly to the Ryder Cup, the Arnold Palmer Cup is an annual team competition for college and university golfers, pitting the best from the United States against the best from the rest of the world. Each team consists of 12 men and 12 women, and Lopez Ramirez, who grew up in Malaga, Spain, will compete for the International team.
The tournament lasts four rounds, with the first three rounds in a two-on-two format. The final round is traditional singles match play, with each golfer on the U.S. team competing directly against one golfer on the International team.
Lopez Ramirez is coming off a career year as a junior, earning First Team All-American honors. She won her second consecutive Southeastern Conference individual championship and was named SEC Golfer of the Year for the second straight season, helping the Bulldogs win their first conference tournament title in program history and advance to the NCAA Championships. She is currently the No. 3 ranked women’s amateur golfer in the world.
