COLUMBUS — The Mississippi University for Women men’s and women’s basketball teams saw action again on Thursday, with the latter picking up a big win with postseason implications.
Eric Vaughn’s team won 72-65 over Greenville University to give themselves a shot at a postseason appearance. The Owls, 8-16, will compete in a winner-take-all game against Spalding University at home on Saturday with the sixth and final spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament on the line.
The Owls trailed after one quarter of action, but took the lead in the second and were able to battle and hold on til the end.
Four players hit double digits on the scoresheet, led by Conley Langford’s 23 points, including 4-8 shooting from beyond the arc and 7-8 from the free throw line. Kymani Smith added another 12 points while Claire Leak and T.K. Jones added 11 each.
The win and in game with Spalding will tip off at 1 p.m. at Pohl Gymnasium on Saturday.
The men’s team lost in their matchup against Greenville, the current conference leaders, with the Owls and Panthers producing a high-scoring 127-102 game.
Sophomore James Dukes had a strong performance, leading the Owls in scoring, hitting 15-21 shots from the floor in a 32-point game. He added 11 boards to complete a double-double performance.
Dariun Doss added 11 points while Trent Walker and Tyson Smithey each had 10.
The high-scoring affair did come with some self-inflicted wounds for the Owls, with 35 turnovers and 15 unforced errors leading to 49 points for the visiting Panthers. They have one more regular season game at home against Spalding on Saturday at 3 p.m.
