SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College golfer Lucy Lunceford is competing in the first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association Division II championships in Boone, Iowa, this week, representing the Lions after a successful freshman year.
The four-day competition began Tuesday with an 8 a.m. tee time at Cedar Pointe Golf Course. Lunceford finished Wednesday in 59th at +40.
Lunceford was selected as an at-large player for the championships, joining a list of 11 Lions to compete at the national championships. She is the first Lion since men’s team golfer Joey Partin, played for a national title in 2017.
Last week, Lunceford finished 13th at the NJCAA South District Championship in Oxford, Ala., scoring 86 and 85 for a two-day total of 171. She is currently ranked 23rd nationally in NJCAA DII, leading her team with an 86.26 stroke average this season and leading her team in nine out of 10 tournaments in the inaugural season for women’s golf in Scooba. She picked up a medal in her collegiate debut at the EMCC Invitational at Tunica National and was the runner-up at the Meridian Community College Jim Redgate Invitational at Briarwood tournament.
