One of several Golden Triangle area teams competing in the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series this weekend in Southaven this weekend, the Lowndes County All-Stars have moved on to the championship game after going undefeated in the 12-and-under age bracket.
Lowndes County, led by coach James Wamble, saw off the Meridian Park All-Stars from Tallahassee, Florida, in the first round by a score of 21-1. Round 2 was a bit more of a challenge, in which Lowndes won 10-1 against the Caledonia All-Stars, before a tough 4-2 win against the Indianola All-Stars sent them through to the final round.
At 9 a.m. Tuesday, the team will face the Chattanooga (Tennessee) All-Stars, who must beat Lowndes twice to win the championship.
Caledonia fought hard, winning against the Cleveland All-Stars to stay alive, but eventually fell to the Lookout Mountain (Georgia) All-Stars on Monday.
Meanwhile in the 10-year-old bracket, the Starkville All-Stars fought their way back to within one game of the championship series after losing in the opening game of the tournament. They won four straight games to try and get back in the final game but lost to Clarksdale on Monday. West Point and Caledonia All-Stars faced similar challenges to get back into contention, losing to Oregon Park (Georgia) and Southaven, respectively.
The Columbus All-Stars, also in the 10-year-old bracket, lost their first game to Oregon Park. The team beat Batesville to stay alive in the tournament but lost a close game to the Walker County Heat by a score of 9-8 to end its run.
Championship games will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Snowden Grove Park in Southaven.
