SCOOBA — A quick stint in Scooba was all former Southern Miss quarterback Ty Keyes needed.
Named a National Junior College Athletic Association First Team All-American and Region 23 MVP, among a plethora of other accolades, Keyes was widely expected to depart East Mississippi Community College after one season under center.
That assumption became reality as the leading passer in all of junior college football committed to Louisiana Tech on Tuesday night.
Keyes finished the 2023 season with 3,350 passing yards and 33 passing touchdowns, leading the nation in both categories.
He also finished second in the country with 257.7 passing yards a game and was 10th in both passing accuracy (58.8 percent) and quarterback efficiency rating (139.7).
Injuries unfortunately plagued his time in Hattiesburg, but Keyes got his shot with the Lions and took full advantage of it as he heads back to play Division I football, this time in Conference USA against teams like Jacksonville State, New Mexico State and Western Kentucky, among others.
