COLUMBUS — Columbus High School football head coach Josh Pulphus has resigned after five years leading the Falcons. Pulphus confirmed the news to The Dispatch on Thursday night.
This comes after Columbus had its worst season since 2018, going 1-10 and winless in district play, allowing 30 points per game defensively.
Pulphus, hired as head coach at Columbus in March 2019, went 16-39 in charge of the Falcons, with his best season coming in 2022.
That year, the Falcons erased a five-year playoff drought, going 5-7 overall and 5-2 in district play.

“I’m thankful for my time here in Columbus,” Pulphus said. “I met a lot of great people and had the opportunity to work with a lot of great kids. I’m looking forward to my future endeavors. I’m proud of all of the kids who have received college scholarships as well as proud of the young men and the life skills that they gained through football.”
This stint was Pulphus’s second at Columbus, as he served as the co-defensive coordinator in 2013. He began his coaching career at Aberdeen in 2008 as a running backs/defensive backs coach, before joining West Point head coach Chris Chambless’ staff as running backs coach from 2010-12. He returned to West Point as tight ends/offensive line coach in 2018.
Pulphus also coached at New Hope, Starkville and Kemper County, where he spent one year as head coach in 2017. The Wildcats went 3-9 in his lone season leading the program.
Columbus will now look to replace its longest tenured coach since Roy McCrory, who led the Falcons from 1997-2003.
Sources told The Dispatch that Pulphus’ resignation will be accepted at Monday’s Columbus Municipal School District board meeting. Columbus High School athletic director John Davis said he is unable to comment on personnel matters before Monday’s meeting.
