Basketball season is heating up around the state and no team has been hotter than Starkville. The Yellow Jacket boys and girls teams kept their undefeated streaks alive on Tuesday while New Hope’s boys team got its first win and West Point’s boys team saw its undefeated run come to a close.
Starkville
The Yellow Jackets’ boys basketball team and girls basketball squad each kept their undefeated streaks alive and in good health Tuesday with victories over visiting Tupelo.
The boys team (9-0) got 22 points and four rebounds from Jaden Tate and TJ Warren added 20 points and two assists in a 69-54 win. Jerwan McCarter pitched in 17 points, five rebounds and three assists to round out Starkville’s top scorers. The girls squad picked up its 11th consecutive win this season with a 61-40 romp over the Golden Wave. Both teams will be back on the court Friday hosting Northwest Rankin. The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
In soccer, the boys and girls entrance into Region 2-7A play has resulted in a 0-2 start for both squads. The boys (4-6-1) fell 1-0 to visiting rival Oxford on Tuesday while the girls (2-7-1) lost 3-0. Region play continues today for both squads at Murrah and the boys play at 7 p.m. while the girls play at 5:30 p.m.
Starkville Academy
Both of the Volunteers’ basketball teams took down Lamar School on Tuesday to begin District 2-4A play in the win column. The boys (5-3, 1-0) captured a 56-41 win over the Raiders while the girls (5-7, 1-0) held on, 34-29. Both teams play next on Friday at Magnolia Heights.
New Hope
The Trojans’ basketball teams both grabbed narrow wins over Louisville on Tuesday with the boys team holding on, 68-66, in double-overtime and the girls team pulling away, 47-44. The win for the boys squad, which was led by 29 points from Josiah Bluitt and 13 points from Christian McDavis, is their first of the season (1-5) while the girls improved to 5-2 overall. Both teams return to action Saturday at Neshoba Central.
The Trojans’ soccer teams both lost 3-0 to visiting Lafayette in their second Region 1-5A contest of the year. The boys (2-7, 0-2) play at Columbus today at 6:45 and the girls (2-7,0-2) play at 5 p.m.
Heritage Academy
The boys team of the Patriots’ basketball program fell to 1-1 on the season with a 74-62 defeat at Pontotoc on Monday. Against St. Joseph Catholic on Monday, the girls team also lost 48-32 to fall to 4-6 on the year. Both teams have a chance to rebound on Thursday in District 2-4A games against visiting Hartfield Academy.
Caledonia
After winning seven games to start the year, Caledonia’s girls basketball team lost its second game in a row on Tuesday, 45-33 against Amory. The boys team also lost a close one to Amory, 41-39, to fall to a 2-6 start to the season. Both squads play next today at Choctaw County. The girls take the court at 6 p.m. and the boys follow up at 7:30 p.m.
In soccer, both of the Cavs’ teams swept West Point in Region 1-5A games. The girls (12-1, 2-0) got two goals from both Aubree Stanford and Harper Whitworth in a 8-0 win over the Green Wave. Caraline Harmon, Emma Parham, Ayden Forrester and Kennidee Pounders all scored one goal each. For the boys (11-2, 2-0), Caledonia won 7-0 behind two goals each from Drew Price and Cole Garner. Cohen Clark, Kolten Walters and Ja’Kylen Sherrod also scored one goal each. Both teams are back on the turf Friday at Lafayette with the boys playing at 6:45 and the girls at 5 p.m.
West Point
The Green Wave boys team saw their streak of eight wins to start the year come to a close on Tuesday at the hands of the Houston Hilltoppers in a 57-50 loss while the girls team (7-4) captured its fourth win in a row, 55-48 over Houston. Each team hosts Aliceville on Friday with the boys playing at 5 p.m. and the girls playing at 6 p.m.
