A few schools got in some basketball and soccer games on Thursday, most notably with Starkville’s and New Hope’s soccer teams each picking up their first region wins of the season. In basketball, Caledonia’s boys squad snapped a streak of six losses with a victory at home.
Starkville
Starkville’s soccer teams are back in the win column.
After both squads suffered a pair of losses to begin Region 7-2A play, the Yellow Jackets’ soccer teams earned their first conference wins of the season at Murrah on Thursday.
The boys team (5-6-1, 1-2) defeated the Mustangs 4-0 as it got one goal each from Cole Sarrette, AJ Richey, Alejandro Camarena Silva and Jackson Eaves. The girls team took home a 6-0 victory to improve to 3-7-1 overall on the season. Both teams host Corinth today with the boys playing at 3 p.m. and the girls at 1:15 in a short break from region games, which resumes on Tuesday hosting Clinton.
New Hope
The Trojans’ soccer teams each captured their first Region 1-5A victory of the season Thursday at Columbus.
The boys team (3-7, 1-2) got four goals from Bennon Adams in defeating the Falcons 6-1. Kyle Baird and Miller Moon also each found the back of the net once for New Hope to help snap a four-game skid. The girls team ( 3-7, 1-2) exploded for a 10-0 victory to halt a stream of five straight losses. Roni Kate West knocked in three goals, and Allie Grace Yates, Jaidyn Dunlap, Angel Moore, Mariah Crenshaw, Colbea Kim, Marin Price and AC Nabors all scored one goal each. Region play continues for the Trojans on Tuesday at Pontotoc with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys hitting the field at 7 p.m.
Caledonia

Aiden Allen delivered the squad’s (11-3, 2-1) only goal of the contest in the first half, but a second-half goal by the Commodores proved to be the decider. The girls team also saw its five-game winning streak come to a close at the hands of the Commodores in a 3-1 loss. Aubree Stanford delivered her squad’s only goal in the contest as the Cavs fell to 12-2 overall and 2-1 in conference games.
In basketball, the Cavs’ boys team (2-6) ended a spree of six straight losses with a dominant 75-53 win over visiting Choctaw County on Thursday. The girls team (7-3) lost its third contest in row, 59-56 in overtime to the Chargers.
