The Starkville Academy girls soccer team opened MAIS Division II East play Monday with a 2-1 victory over Heritage Academy in Starkville.
The Volunteers, who snapped a two-game skid during which they were shut out, improved to 10-4 overall, while the Patriots slipped to 3-2-1.
Starkville Academy will play Thursday at Bayou Academy in Cleveland, while Heritage Academy is off until Aug. 31 when the Patriots will visit Indianola Academy.
The Volunteers and Patriots will have a rematch Sept. 7 in Columbus.

The visiting Chiefs improved to 5-1, using 10 hits, 6 walks and 5 errors to rout the Volunteers.
Trailing 4-0, Starkville Academy scored its run in the bottom of the first inning. Caralyne Montgomery led off the inning by reaching on an error and moved to second on a single to left by Ali Grace Williams. She moved to third on an infield grounder and scored on Elizabeth Basel’s double with two outs.
The Volunteers, who have scored at least 10 runs five times during their 6-2 start, were held to four hits. Magnolia Heights is 5-1.
