GREENWOOD — The Heritage Academy boys basketball won the MAIS Class 5A state championship on Saturday, defeating Oak Forest Academy 77-72 in the championship game at Pillow Academy.
The Patriots finished the season with a 24-5 record, winning District 1 with a 9-1 record in their division to clinch the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The team registered postseason wins over Leake, Simpson, Brookhaven, and Rossville Christian on its way to the championship game. This is the fourth title for the program and its first title in Class 5A.
Head coach Andrew Howell arrived at Heritage in 2023 and took the team to the quarterfinals of the overall tournament in his first season, losing to eventual champions Jackson Academy 76-54, as well as losing to eventual 5A champions, Parklane Academy.
