Heritage Academy celebrated a thrilling homecoming victory against Leake Academy on Friday, edging out the Rebels with a last-minute touchdown in a game filled with tense moments and key defensive stands.
The Patriots’ defense set the tone early, forcing a turnover on downs on Leake’s opening drive.
However, Heritage struggled to gain momentum, punting after three-and-outs on their first two possessions. Leake threatened with a drive deep into Heritage territory, but the Patriots’ defense forced a fumble at the 11-yard line to keep the game scoreless.
The action picked up in the second quarter. After a short punt gave Heritage excellent field position, quarterback Thompson Regimbal connected with Xzavier Webber for a 57-yard touchdown, putting the Patriots ahead. Leake answered with a drive to the Patriots’ 8-yard line but settled for a field goal. As the half continued, both teams traded possession without capitalizing until Leake broke through with a 7-yard rushing touchdown after converting a critical third-and-long with a 40-yard pass.
“We played complementary football,” head coach Tobias Smith said about the slow start to the game. “We understand that the offense won’t always be the best. Sometimes the defense won’t play the best. We just gotta play hard.”
The Patriots’ next drive showed promise with a 20-yard run by Adyn Westmoreland and a key 20-yard reception by Webber culminating in a 17-yard touchdown from Regimbald to wide receiver Charlie Fowler to end the quarter.
After three-and-outs by both teams, Heritage drove down to Leake’s 30-yard line before a late-hit penalty pushed Heritage into the red zone and a crucial interception ended the drive.
Leake couldn’t take advantage of the turnover, punting after being stifled by Heritage’s defense.
In the third quarter, the Patriots were penalized by a holding call, negating a strong 20-yard run and forcing a punt. A solid defensive effort kept the Rebels at bay, but penalties helped Leake march downfield and find the end zone, taking the lead.
Heritage struck back with a touchdown on a 24-yard pass to wide-receiver Charlie Fowler, followed by an interception by Webber that set up Westmoreland’s 3-yard rushing score, giving the Patriots a two-score lead.
Leake responded with a penalty-aided drive, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to pull within three points. Heritage punted on their next possession, pinning Leake deep in their own territory.
In the fourth quarter, the Patriots drove down to the 1-yard line but were pushed back to the 4-yard line, where Regimbal was intercepted on fourth down. The Rebels capitalized on their defensive stop and moved into Heritage territory before fumbling, giving the ball back to the Patriots. However, Heritage couldn’t break through and was forced to punt.
With time winding down, Leake moved down the field and converted a crucial fourth down before scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute remaining. Trailing by 4 points late, Heritage started their final drive from their own 33-yard line. A false start penalty set them back, but Regimbal found Webber on a critical fourth-and-8 to keep the drive alive. Webber hauled in another pass to bring the ball to the 26-yard line, and wide receiver Nash McCrary followed with a key reception that moved the Patriots inside the 10-yard line. After three incomplete passes, Regimbal connected with Fowler for a dramatic game-winning touchdown, sealing the thrilling homecoming victory for the Patriots.
Smith said his team can build off of this game as they go through the rest of the season.
“Our goal is to get to the big one at the end of the year,” Smith said. “We are just going to keep on winning and prepare for the next game on Monday.”
Heritage Academy will travel to Meridian next week to face Lamar School.
