BUDAPEST, Hungary — The last 400 meters made all the difference for former Mississippi State track and field athlete Marco Arop during the 800-meter final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Hungary on Saturday.
Coming into the event as the top-ranked 800-meter runner in the world, Arop broke free of the pack, cruising to a first place finish and earning Canada’s first-ever gold medal at worlds.
He became the second Mississippi State track and field alum to win gold at worlds, following Anderson Peters, a two-time world champion in javelin.
Arop finished with a time of 1:44.24, slower than his semifinal result, but plenty to win gold.
