STARKVILLE — In two seasons at Penn State, Joe Moorhead’s offense failed to score 14 points all of one time, in the fourth game of his tenure.
In his first two conference games as Mississippi State’s head coach, his Bulldogs scored 13 points combined. Both were losses. Both cast doubt on what could have been one of the most exciting football seasons in MSU history.
The most recent disappointment was Saturday’s 13-6 loss to Florida (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference), in which MSU (3-2, 0-2 SEC) mustered just 202 yards. It is the first time since at least 2000 that MSU was held to 202 or fewer yards in consecutive games, when factoring in being held to 201 yards against Kentucky.
Nick Fitzgerald threw for 98 yards on 11-for-26 passing and ran 20 times for 32 yards. Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks had more passing yards, 216, than MSU had total yards, 202.
MSU’s only points came from two Jace Christmann field goals, 34 and 39 yards.
