STARKVILLE — A week of speculation about Keytaon Thompson ended in a meaningful win for Nick Fitzgerald.
After his claim on Mississippi State’s starting quarterback job was widely questioned, Fitzgerald threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more Saturday night to lead the Mississippi State football team to a 28-13 victory against No. 16 Texas A&M at Davis Wade Stadium.
Fitzgerald was 14-for-22 for 241 yards. He also rushed for 88 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown run that helped MSU improve to 5-3 and 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference.
Fitzgerald’s touchdown throws — 25 yards to Stephen Guidry and 38 yards to Osirus Mitchell — were the looping, over-the-top throws Fitzgerald was thought to be incapable of executing.
The coup de gras was his touchdown run that came after an interception in the end zone by Erroll Thompson.
Thompson saw action on three plays, in which MSU only moved the chains via Texas A&M penalty.
