SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College women’s basketball has a new assistant coach.
Markeia Porter was named an assistant coach for the Lions program by current head coach Isaiah Butler following her first coaching role at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri, last season.
“Markeia has a lot of hunger and passion for the game. She really loves teaching the game and is great with post player skill development,” Butler said in Monday’s press release. “Markeia also owns playing and coaching experience on the junior-college level, so she understands the process our players are embarking on and will be able to represent what we are trying to do here at EMCC.”
Porter played two years of junior college basketball herself at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, averaging 5.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game in 61 games played.
She reached two National Junior College Athletic Association Region 16 Tournament semifinals in her time with the Raiders before transferring to Elizabeth City State in North Carolina, a Division II HBCU.
There, she averaged 3.2 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game over 56 games played. The Vikings reached the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 16 Tournament during Porter’s lone season at Jefferson..
“I’m super excited about joining Coach Butler here at EMCC,” Porter said in Monday’s press release. “He seems to be a great leader and a great person. He’s definitely someone I can learn from both on and off the basketball court.”
