Volunteers from Columbus Soccer Organization, Columbus United, Heritage Academy soccer, Kiwanis Key Club and Core Fitness joined the ongoing Lee Gym cleanout effort, a project that began when CSO agreed to purchase the building in 2023, beginning a renovation and fundraising project to turn it into a multi-sport facility.

The organization has continued the cleanout project for nearly two years while fundraising for the costs to renovate the gym floor that can host indoor soccer, futsal, pickleball and other interchangeable courts for what they believe will be a one-of-a-kind center for indoor recreation.
“This is our final cleanout,” CSO Director Tom Velek said. “A key part of that is we’re demoing down the lockers for sale or scrap and that will give us a space to show people. We have a new portal coming up that will have all the sponsorships on display, and I think we can get close to what we need through our fundraising campaign.”
CSO’s fundraising will continue this weekend at the first Empower Health and Wellness speaker series, sponsored by Allegro. Mississippi State Resistance Exercise Performance lab director Dr. Zack Gillen will deliver a presentation on balancing physical training with mental health awareness at the Lyceum at Lee on Saturday at 7 p.m., with proceeds going toward the facility.
The volunteers finished cleaning out the main floor of the old gymnasium and the locker rooms, though still have a few lockers to clean out.
