Two local hoopsters have been honored as Mississippi’s best in their respective classifications.
Columbus’ senior Mike Hood was named Class 5A Mr. Basketball on Wednesday. Hood, a forward who led the Falcons to a 23-5 record and the 1-5A district championship, is averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and has scored more than 1000 points in his Columbus career. Hood and the Falcons open the MHSAA playoffs Saturday against Florence.
Starkville’s Jada Gay was named Miss 7A Basketball for the second consecutive season. Gay, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, averages 16.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2 assists per game for the Yellow Jackets (27-3), who opened the MHSAA 7A playoffs yesterday against Hernando. Gay is a Southern Miss signee.
The Mr. and Miss Basketball winners were selected by a panel of coaches and media members from around the state.
