COLUMBUS — Caledonia will be one of three local teams taking part in the Friendly City Classic this weekend at the Mississippi University for Women. Games will take place on Friday and Saturday at Pohl Gymnasium in a test for 10 high school programs from Mississippi and Alabama.
The Cavaliers boys basketball team is 11-2 this year, led by head coach Jonathan Comer, and will face Hatley on Friday afternoon in the tournament.
“Hatley will be a solid test,” Comer said. “They are 8-7 and they’ve got a senior guard, Jarret Mitchell, that’s 6-foot-4 and can really play, he leads their team. They shoot the ball really well. We have to make sure we are uptight on defense and we dictate the pace of the game.”
Comer’s Cavaliers have won six games in a row and 10 of their last 11 in what is shaping up to be a strong campaign. Their style of play features a foundation of good fundamentals on defense and the work is showing on the court.
Comer hopes to keep the good performances going with the Hatley matchup and a test at Noxubee County on Monday before district play picks up again in the new year.
“The guys have bought into the, ‘It starts on the defensive end’ motto,” Comer said of their strong start. “We’ve played really good defense during this winning streak. We’ve held teams to an average of 45 points a game. It also hasn’t hurt that we’ve hit 11 threes per game on average in the last 11 games.”
