CALEDONIA — In its first season, Caledonia girls powerlifting will be represented at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 4A state championships after a medal-winning performance at the North State championships in Fulton.
The Cavaliers sent three to compete at Itawamba Agricultural High School on Friday: Lauren Brown, Izzy Glasgow and Natalie Martin.
Martin and Glasgow came up short in their respective weight classes, with Glasgow finishing tied for third in the 181-pound class, losing on a tiebreaker. Brown, placing second in the 165-pound class, who will be headed to state championships in Jackson.
“All three ladies did a fantastic job preparing for the North State powerlifting meet,” Caledonia head coach Jason Forrester said. “They really looked at the competition and knew they would have to work hard.”
Brown went a perfect 7-of-7 on her lifts for the day, maxing out at 315 points on squat and 115 pounds on bench press.
“Lauren had a really good day,” Forrester said. “She didn’t miss an attempt. She set her goals, knew what she wanted to do and got it done.”
Caledonia boys powerlifting has had regional and statewide success over the past decade, winning Region 3 title in 2017 and an individual state title from Dalton Cantrell in 2018.
Now, Brown looks to add to the short, but successful, history of the girls program for the Cavaliers.
“I’m super proud of these three and the whole team in the first year for them,” Forrester said.
The Class 4A state championships will be held at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson on March 31.
