Junior guard Mary Beth Briggs scored 9 of her team-high 17 points during the third quarter to lead the Oak Hill girls basketball team to a 51-45 win over Columbus Christian on Tuesday in the Columbus Christian Christmas Tournament.
The Raiders outscored the Rams 19-9 during that quarter to seize a 31-19 halftime lead.
Columbus Christian chipped away a bit during the third, outscoring Oak Hill 11-6 behind 8 points from Morgan Whitten, who finished with 14. Faith Yeates led the Rams with 17 points, including 8 during the fourth quarter. Two 3-pointers from senior Kate Wheeler accounted for all of Oak Hill’s scoring during the period.
Oak Hill had chances to take a more commanding lead but struggled from the free throw line. Each team scored 13 points from the stripe, but the Raiders took 34 shots, missing on 10 of 14 free throws during the second half. Dovie Suggs scored 11 points for Oak Hill.
Both teams will conclude tournament play Wednesday, with the Raiders facing Van Cleave at 10 a.m. and the Rams taking on Heritage at 4:15 p.m.
Boys basketball
West Lowndes 78, Oak Hill 49: Junior guard Cameron Ellis poured in 28 points as the Panthers crushed the Raiders.
Ellis scored 17 of his points during the first half as West Lowndes grabbed a 41-15 lead. Jamarveion Seals hit three of his four 3-pointers during the half and finished with 13 points. Fredrick Rice added 12 points for the Panthers (5-8).
For the Raiders, junior Collins Trolio led the way with 20 points, with senior Cameron Dill netting 16.
West Lowndes will be seeking its third tournament win at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday against Central Hinds, while Oak Hill will face Amory Christian at 1:45 p.m.
Columbus Christian 56, J.Z. George 52: Sophomore guard Joe Edwards scored 22 points to lead the Rams to their second straight victory at their Christmas tournament.
Edwards was the only CCA player to score in each quarter as the Rams improved to 5-4. Junior guard Drake Shaw scored 14 points, and freshman Mason Wright joined them in double figures with 11.
D’Anthony McGlothan led all scorers with 27 points for J.Z. George, including 18 during the second half.
The Rams will wrap up the Columbus Christian Academy Christmas Tournament at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a game against Winona Christian.
Booneville 60, West Point 48: The Green Wave fell to 6-5 with a loss to the Blue Devils (10-2) in the Blue Mountain College Christmas Classic.
West Point will welcome Okolona for a Jan. 8 game before resuming region play by hosting New Hope on Jan. 11.
Caledonia 46, Fayette County 42; Caledonia 33, Lamar County 31: The Cavaliers won back-to-back games in the Battle of the Borders to improve to 10-5 in Caledonia.
Fayette County is 2-6, while Lamar County fell to 1-7.
The Cavaliers will be looking for their first region win when they travel Jan. 4 to Mooreville.
