High school basketball and soccer season is here and many area teams are off to the races with their seasons already underway. Here’s a quick look at how they fared this week.
Starkville Academy
The Volunteers opened the boys soccer season on Thursday with a 5-4 loss to visiting Pillow Academy. Trailing 4-1 at halftime, Starkville Academy (0-1) outscored the Mustangs 3-1 in the second half but couldn’t complete the comeback. The team hosts Jackson Academy at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 for its next game.
The Volunteers’ girls basketball team fell to 1-3 on the season Thursday in a 79-33 loss at Pillow Academy. Pillow led 30-3 after the first quarter, 40-15 at halftime and 63-23 heading into the final quarter. On Tuesday the team lost 39-35 to Winston Academy. The Volunteers, whose only win of the season so far is a 63-11 triumph over Kemper Academy on Oct. 30, hosted Park Place on Friday.
Starkville
The boys soccer team of the Yellow Jackets (2-2) had no issue in taking down Heritage Academy 5-0 on Thursday for its second win of the year. It was a bounce-back victory after losing 4-0 at Hernando. On Nov. 1 the team lost 3-0 to New Albany. On Tuesday, the Yellow Jackets’ girls soccer team fell to 0-2-1 in a 2-0 loss at Hernando. The girls are back on the field at 10 a.m. today at Caledonia.
Heritage Academy
The Patriots’ boys soccer team fell to 1-1 on the season on Thursday in a 5-0 loss to Starkville. The team opened the season with a 8-0 victory over Regents on Monday and will play at Muddy River on Nov. 10.
Caledonia
Both of the Cavaliers’ basketball squads opened their season on Tuesday with wins over Choctaw County. The girls team captured with a 55-35 win victory and the boys won 71-34. Both teams are back on the court Nov. 11.
West Point
The Green Wave boys’ basketball team took down Houston 62-31 on Tuesday to open their season, but the girls’ team (1-2) didn’t have quite as much luck. They fell 50-45 to the Hilltoppers in their second loss of the year. Their first win was a 35-11 rout over Nettleton on Nov. 1. Both teams are back in action on Nov. 13 at Louisville.
Columbus
The basketball season started off with a victory for the Falcons’ boys basketball team. Columbus notched a 75-36 win over Meridian to get the year rolling while its girls team suffered a 54-42 loss to the Wildcats. Both squads played at Forest Hill on Friday in their second game of the season.
The Falcons’ boys soccer team was dealt a 5-0 setback by the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science on Thursday to begin their season, and the girls team lost to MSMS 7-0. Both teams play their second game of the season on Nov. 11 at Kosciusko.
New Hope
The soccer seasons for the Trojans girls and boys teams both started off with wins. New Hope’s boys took down Amory 4-1 and the girls won 3-1 over the Panthers. They are back in action on Nov. 14 at Hernando.
