Mississippi State ace Landon Sims left Friday’s game at Tulane in the fourth inning after appearing to injure his throwing arm on a pitch.
Sims shook his right hand after throwing a pitch to the Green Wave’s Bennett Lee with two out in the bottom of the fourth and the Bulldogs leading 6-0. He called for the trainer and departed the game. TV cameras captured Sims upset in the dugout, his head hidden beneath his No. 23 jersey.
Sims had been dealing up to that point, striking out 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and working on a perfect game. But in one pitch, his brilliant night was over and his health was in question.
The right-hander had a 1.50 ERA through his first two starts of the season, including 13 strikeouts over seven innings Feb. 18 vs. Long Beach State. Sims moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation this year after striking out 100 batters in 56 1/3 innings last season.
