A rose to Golden Triangle libraries, whose diverse range of reading programs help our children continue to develop reading and comprehension skills while out of school for summer break. From story time to reading challenges to programs that help our kids learn more about the world around them, library programs are geared to capture the interest of kids on several fronts. Reading is foundational to all learning and, as such, must continue to develop without the long interruptions that summer breaks create. We thank our library staff for making reading programs fun and accessible to our children.
A rose to Main Street Columbus, which will hold the first of two Sounds of Summer concerts on Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30 at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. Carl and the Road Dogs will be the headliners this week. The second concert is scheduled for June 25, featuring the Shane Tubbs Band. Both concerts feature free admission and food and drink vendors. You can bring your lawn chairs and blankets, but leave your pets and coolers at home. The concerts have proven to be popular, known for their laid-back family-friendly atmosphere.
A rose to the hundreds of kids operating dozens of lemonade stands as part of a nationwide event called Lemonade Day, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 13. Starkville began participation in Lemonade Day in 2018. The next year, Columbus and West Point joined the fun. Lemonade stands have been associated with summer for well over 100 years. For most of that time, it was a spur-of-the-moment activity for kids. But since 2017, the official Lemonade Day has used the stands to introduce children to the world of retail business. The program focuses on marketing, budgeting, pricing and other aspects common to the real world of retailing. One thing that hasn’t changed is that it’s a lot of fun. So if you are out and about next Saturday, we urge you to find a lemonade stand and make a purchase.
