A rose to community efforts to provide area children with programs to stimulate and entertain students through the summer break. In Columbus, the Frank P. Phillips Memorial YMCA has plenty of openings for its annual Adventure Zone day camp. The camp, open to children ages 5-12, runs from June 1 through July 22 at both the Columbus and Caledonia YMCA branches. The downtown YMCA branch is also offering a camp for boys ages 11-15 and a camp for girls ages 11-15. Campers will learn life skills, practice devotionals, swim and cultivate friendships during the camp, which will also run June 1-July 22. In Starkville, the J.L. King Center is accepting campers for its five-week day camp, where children ages 6-15 will learn from new professionals each week, focusing on physical fitness, culinary skills, good hygiene practices, arts and crafts and more. The camp begins June 8 and will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
A rose to discount grocery store chain Aldi, which has confirmed it will be opening a location in Columbus after opening its first Golden Triangle location in Starkville in 2023. Aldi is the hottest name in the grocery business as it continues an $8 billion expansion that will add 800 new stores across the country by 2028. The German grocer stands apart for many of its approaches, including a 25-cent refundable shopping cart, having customers provide their own bags and a scaled-down inventory of about 1,500 of the most popular items. Although no location or opening date has been announced, Columbus Place, formerly Leigh Mall, has been mentioned as a possibility. The arrival of Aldi gives the community a new and different option in grocery shopping. We are eager for its arrival.
A rose to the City of Columbus for sponsoring a job fair that will help job seekers across the Golden Triangle find employers with positions to fill. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday on the upper level of the Trotter Convention Center. Between 25 and 30 businesses have registered for the event so far, including representatives from city departments, 4-County Electric Power Association, Steel Dynamics and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. In addition to information about current openings, employers will provide information about general career paths for high school and college students and the broader public. Employers can reserve a place at the job fair until Tuesday by calling coordinator Glenda Richardson at (662) 364-1850. The event is free for both job seekers and employers.
