We commend Chief Charles D. Yarbrough for recommending that the City of Columbus Fire Department lower its applicant age requirement from 21 to 18. Mayor Stephen Jones is also on board and supports his initiative.
Just for the record, this is ongoing and being implemented in neighboring cities all around us with an outstanding track record. The City of Starkville, where Yarbrough formerly served as fire chief, also lowered its hiring age to 18 for a number of valid reasons.
Let’s look at the scientific data on why many municipalities are following this trend. First and foremost, it helps combat recruitment and staffing shortages. Second, younger applicants are easier to train, will stay with the department longer and serve their community over a longer period of time. Younger candidates are more adaptable to lifelong training habits. This makes them more compliant with rigorous EMT and fire rescue training and course work.
When it comes to maturity, each qualifying applicant has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. One size does not fit all. Many younger individuals are more mature than some of their contemporaries who may be much older and already experienced in another career path.
It is always a good metric to review hiring standards from other municipalities that have been very successful in hiring younger applicants. We here in Columbus should be ready to move forward and stay competitive with our workforce in all agencies with tried and true methodologies and pay scales.
