Your newspaper is an excellent source for staying updated on GTR-related local news. I read with great interest your coverage of industrial growth in the area, and I often connect these developments with Mary Politz’s columns on local businesses.
It is encouraging to see the steady stream of positive news regarding industrial expansion in Columbus. For example, your recent front-page article, “Lowndes biocarbon facility creates 100 six-figure jobs” (Dispatch, April 16), highlights the significant economic momentum the area is experiencing. However, despite this industrial growth, local businesses in Columbus appear to be struggling. Columbus Place (formerly Leigh Mall), though renovated, remains largely vacant. In contrast, nearby Starkville seems to be thriving, with growing businesses and increased activity. This trend raises some concerns and must be examined carefully by the Columbus city government, particularly our new mayor.
It is important to understand why many employees choose to live in Starkville rather than Columbus. Factors such as housing, schools, public amenities, and overall quality of life likely play a significant role in these decisions. Identifying and addressing these underlying issues is essential if Columbus hopes to fully benefit from its recent industrial growth. Without such efforts, much of the economic gain, through property taxes, local spending, and community development, may continue to flow outside the city. By taking proactive steps now, city leadership can ensure that Columbus not only attracts industry but also retains the people who drive its success.
