Two Severstal workers were charged with grand larceny after at least one of them was caught on camera, taking materials from the steel mill.
The two men, one from Sulligent, Ala., and the other from Columbus, stole around $3,000 worth of property while they were at work, said Eli Perrigen, criminal investigator for the Lowndes County Sheriff” Office.
Perrigen picked up 44-year-old Kenneth Lee Hollis, of 173 Lampkin Road in Sulligent, Ala., and 29-year-old Jeremy Brian Hernstrom, of 295 Brewer Road in Columbus, from work on Wednesday at around 1 p.m.
“They had some property stolen on site,” Perrigen said, noting one of the suspects had been caught on company surveillance.
“In further investigating the matter, we figured out one more was involved,” Perrigen said.
Severstal officials called the sheriff”s department to notify them of the theft, so deputies could arrest the suspects while they were at the work site.
Both men were terminated on the day of their arrest, according to Perrigen. Their bond was set at $3,500.
A Severstal spokesperson could not be reached for comment, and the sheriff”s department would not comment on the nature of the stolen items.
