NEW YORK – Patriot Rail Corp. said it closed its purchase of six short line railroads, including one in the Golden Triangle, that were owned by lumber and wood products maker Weyerhaeuser Co.
Patriot Rail closed the purchase Dec. 30. Terms weren”t disclosed. It gained six railroads with 88 employees and about 160 miles of track in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Washington state.
The sale included the Golden Triangle Railroad, which operates more than 9.5 route miles in central Mississippi. Weyerhaeuser operates a wood pulp fiber plant in Columbus.
The rails carry 60,000 carloads of freight per year, including wood and paper products, chemicals, minerals, agricultural products, and industrial waste. They primarily serve Weyerhaeuser and International Paper Co. mills.
Weyerhaeuser, based in Federal Way, Wis., agreed to sell the railroads to Patriot Rail in August. Patriot Rail, of Boca Raton, Fla., now owns 13 short line railroads.
