Area investigators have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death of a Columbus man Thursday night.
Shaquavus Lashun White, 18, of West Point, has been charged with manslaughter for the death of 18-year-old Xavier Dora, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Dora was shot at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday in an abandoned house near the intersection of 17th Street and Fifth Avenue South in Columbus. He died later that night at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle while undergoing surgery, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said. Investigators said Friday that they believe at least five people were in the house engaging in some type of illegal activity when an argument broke out and Dora was shot.
Another victim in the same shooting, who investigators did not identify, suffered non life-threatening injuries.
CPD Chief Fred Shelton credited CPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, with assistance from West Point Police Department, with helping make an arrest within 24 hours after Dora’s death. He added there may be more arrests to come in the case.
White is in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond has not been set.
