A Columbus man is behind bars after a March shooting spree at Greentree Apartments left three cars riddled with bullet holes.
Devin Jermal Rice, 30, was arrested Sunday on three counts of hurling a missile, according to a Monday press release from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Rice was wanted on charges that stemmed from an alleged shooting on March 5 at 500 Greentree Drive.
The press release said deputies responded to reports of shots fired and found three cars with bullet holes.
After collecting witness statements and security footage of the shooting, Hawkins said Rice was identified as a suspect.
While the footage allegedly shows Rice intentionally shooting at the cars, Hawkins said investigators do not currently know his motive.
Since Rice did not shoot at people or into an apartment, he was charged with hurling a missile rather than other charges, Hawkins said.
LCSO received an anonymous tip Friday through Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers about Rice’s location.
Two days later, deputies executed an arrest warrant at New Vision West Mobile Home Park.
Hawkins said the tip was inspired by LCSO’s Warrant Wednesday post on April 1.
Warrant Wednesday, which began in January, is a weekly posting of several suspects in the county who have outstanding warrants to encourage community input to help LCSO make arrests.
Hawkins said Sunday’s arrest showcases the effectiveness of the initiative.
“We take these tips seriously, and we do follow up on them,” Hawkins said. “And we want the public to continue to provide us with these types of tips so that we can apprehend people that are wanted, and make our community safer.”
Rice was arrested without issue and taken to Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
Rice’s bond has not been set.
