A Vernon, Alabama man died Wednesday after his pickup crashed into a Golden Triangle Waste Services garbage truck on Highway 12 east of Columbus.
Paul Samskar, 67, was traveling east on the highway near the Alabama line at about 3 p.m. when he struck the garbage truck that was running a route north of Lisa Perkins Road, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Samskar died at the scene, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said. The collision caused “moderate injuries” to one of the two workers on the back of the garbage truck, who was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, according to Bryant Flake, MHP public information officer for Troop G.
There were no other passengers in the car with Samskar during the crash, Flake said.
Samskar worked as a paramedic with BMH-Golden Triangle, Merchant noted in a text message to media outlets.
Baptist declined to comment when reached by The Dispatch on Thursday.
