CLAY COUNTY – Two passengers died and four were injured Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash near West Tibbe Road.
Christopher Standifer, 19, and Nia Gates, 18, were identified as the two victims in the crash, according to a press release from Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. when the driver of a car traveling north on Highway 45 Alternate collided with an eastbound car carrying four people, including Standifer and Gates, near the intersection of West Tibbe Road.
Standifer and Gates were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and the other passenger of the eastbound car also sustained injuries in the crash. Both the driver and passenger inside the northbound car were also injured in the accident.
The victims were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, though the driver of the eastbound car was later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she remains in critical condition, Public Affairs Officer Bryant Flake wrote in a text to The Dispatch.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Flake said.
