Two Columbus Police Department officers are resigning.
Yolanda Young and Raymond Hackler submitted resignation requests to the city council. The city council, during its Tuesday meeting, approved both resignations.
Young’s resignation is effective April 25. She joined the department in 2011. She cited medical reasons in her resignation letter.
Young was one of three officers present at the Oct. 16 officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of Ricky Ball. The incident sparked a wave of protests and resulted in suspensions for Young and fellow officer Johnny Branch. The city council terminated Canyon Boykin, the third officer involved in the incident. He has since filed suit against the city. Ball’s death remains under investigation by state authorities.
Hackler’s resignation is effective March 24. He did not indicate a reason for the resignation in his letter.
“I was sworn in as a full time officer with this department in August of 2006,” Hackler wrote. “While serving this agency, I have come to know a lot of good people that simply want to do a good job, and are willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice.”
Hackler has served as a public information officer for CPD.
CPD Chief Oscar Lewis said he could not comment on the specifics for the two resignations.
“We hate to see them go, but wish them the best,” Lewis said after Tuesday’s meeting.
CPD, including Young and Hackler, currently has 52 officers, according Joe Dillon, the city’s public information officer.
